fitting's got a 45 degree elbow on it, so do I need any thread sealant to get a good seal on the o-ring face?

No sealant needed on this one. The o-ring face seal design handles the sealing on its own, so adding thread sealant would actually be unnecessary and could cause more trouble than it's worth. No mandrel is required either, which makes the installation pretty straightforward compared to some other crimp fittings.
