Marine and military applications use it pretty regularly, along with chemical processing, pulp and paper, food and beverage processing, and offshore drilling. It's a Danfoss/Eaton Aeroquip piece, so it shows up across a wide range of demanding environments where a reliable pipe-to-flare connection is needed.

need to go from 1/2-14 npt male over to a -12 jic male, is that what this adapter does?

Built for exactly that thread change, it is a straight steel adapter with a 1/2-14 male NPT on one end and a 1-1/16-12 male JIC 37 degree flare on the other.
