fitting says it's for R2 hose, does that mean it won't work on anything lighter duty?

R2 is the hose type this fitting is matched to, and yes, pairing it with a lighter spec hose would be outside its intended use. The whole system is engineered together so the crimp interface performs correctly and hose assembly life holds up like it should. If your application runs general purpose low or medium pressure hydraulics, you're in the right ballpark. The product notes do call out using H277 or H435 series fittings instead if your setup has shock hazards, so that's worth keeping in mind before you commit.
