doing some replacing on my tractor. is this meant for high pressure setups or just standard stuff?

Standard low and medium pressure hydraulic applications are exactly what these are built to handle. You will want to switch over to an H277 or H435 hose if your system deals with shock hazards.

got a -08 hose and need a straight male pipe end, is this the right fitting or am i off a size?

For hose fit, it matches a -08 hose size and it is a straight crimp style fitting in the Aeroquip TTC steel crimp family. On the threaded end, it is a 3/8-18 male NPTF connection, so it is a good match when your port or adapter is 3/8-18 female NPT/NPTF.

fitting says no thread sealant needed -- is that right for an NPT connection? thought those always needed tape or compound

Male NPTF threads are cut to a tighter tolerance than standard NPT, so the threads themselves form a pressure-tight seal through thread-to-thread interference rather than relying on tape or compound. That's the whole point of the F in NPTF. With this fitting you're good to go straight out of the box, no sealant step required.

It’s set up for a -08 hose and a 3/8-18 male NPTF pipe thread on the other end, in a straight configuration.
