fitting says it works with H277 or H435 hose, does that mean it won't crimp right onto other hose types, or is that just where it's been rated?

Those two hose types are what this fitting is rated and validated for. Using it with other hose constructions could mean the crimp dimensions don't seat the way they should, which affects holding strength and sealing. If your application calls for H277 or H435 in a -04 size, you're in good shape. Outside of those, you'd be working beyond what the fitting's been confirmed for.
