got a setup with 3/4-14 nptf ports, is this tee the right one for tying a branch line in

For tying in a branch, it’s a pipe to pipe steel tee with 3/4-14 NPTF threads on all three ends, so it matches 3/4-14 NPTF connections on the run and the branch.

fitting's got a male NPT on the branch and female NPT on the run -- is that right for splitting off a line without losing the main flow path?

That's exactly how it works. The branch port is 3/4-14 male NPT and the run ports are 3/4-14 female NPT, so you can tap into an existing line through the run while adding a branch connection off the side. It's a pretty common setup when you need to pull a signal or feed a secondary circuit without breaking the main line apart.
