got a hose end that’s 9/16-18 JIC, and the port on the block is 1/2-14 pipe. is this the straight adapter for that?

For that mix of threads, this adapter is the match. One end is 1/2-14 male NPTF pipe thread, and the other end is 9/16-18 male SAE 37 degree flare, which is the common JIC flare style.

trying to hook a 1/2-14 npt port over to a 9/16-18 jic line, is this the right straight adapter?

Built for that exact thread change, it has a 1/2-14 male NPT on one end and a 9/16-18 male JIC 37 degree flare on the other, in a straight (in-line) adapter style.
