trying to match up a hose end here, is this the straight male JIC 37 flare with 7/8-14 threads for an -08 hose?

You are looking at a straight male JIC 37 degree flare end with 7/8-14 threads on one side, and it crimps onto an -08 hose on the other side.

fitting says it works with H277 or H435 hose, does that mean it won't crimp onto other hose types?

For this series, yes, those are the two hose types it's built around. The 1AA10MJ8 is matched to H277 and H435 hoses, and that pairing is what ensures a proper crimp geometry and a secure, leak-free connection. Running it on a different hose could mean the crimp dimensions don't line up right, so sticking with those two is the safe call.
