trying to match up a hose to a half inch npt male end. what size hose does a fitting like this take

You'll want to use a -08 size hose for that connection. The component features a straight 1/2-14 male NPTF thread on one side and attaches directly to a half-inch hose line on the other.

You are looking at a straight crimp fitting with a 1/2-14 male NPTF pipe thread on one end and a hose end sized for -08 hose on the other.

fitting says no thread sealant needed, is that right for an NPT connection? thought those always needed tape or compound

NPT threads do typically rely on some form of sealant in most applications, but this particular fitting is engineered to seal without it. The design handles the sealing function as part of how it mates up, so you can skip the tape or pipe dope.
