got a hose end that’s 3/4-16 JIC, and the port on the valve is 1/2-14 pipe. is this the straight adapter for that setup?

For that combination, yes. One side is 1/2-14 male NPTF (pipe) and the other side is a 3/4-16 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel, and it’s a straight steel adapter.

got a hose end thats 3/4-16 JIC, will this screw right on and let me go to 1/2 pipe?

Use-case wise, yes, it’s a straight adapter that goes from a 3/4-16 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel on one side to a 1/2-14 male NPTF pipe thread on the other.
