got a #12 female JIC on one end and need to step down to a #4 male JIC, this straight adapter gonna do that?

That's what this fitting handles. One end is a 1-1/16-12 female JIC 37-degree flare, the other is a 7/16-20 male JIC 37-degree flare. Both sides use the same 37-degree flare seating, so the connection relies on metal-to-metal contact at the flare rather than thread sealant. Worth noting that no sealant comes with it, and none should be needed given the flare-style seating on both ends.

This adapter is compatible with tubing that has a 0.25-inch outer diameter.
