got a -6 hose here. is this the right fitting for it, or am i mixin things up

Same thing. The -6 hose dash size is the standard designation, and it corresponds to a 3/8-inch inside diameter hose. This fitting is sized for exactly that, so if your hose is already marked as a -6, you're good to go.
