got a cylinder setup that likes to run away on the way down. is this the kind of valve that’ll hold the load and keep things from free-falling if a hose lets go?

For controlling moving loads, a counterbalance valve like this is used to prevent load runaway and provide load holding plus hose failure safety. It regulates flow into and out of the actuator, and when it is mounted close to or within the actuator it can stop runaway in a hose burst situation.
