trying to swap out a fitting on a -04 hose, is this one the 7/16-24 male inverted flare style?

Does this fitting work without any thread sealant, or do I need to tape the threads before putting it on?

No sealant needed on the threads. The inverted flare connection on this fitting is self-sealing by design, so adding tape or pipe dope would actually be working against you. Just make sure the crimp is done correctly and the flare seats clean, and you'll get a solid leak-free connection.
