does this fitting need a mandrel to crimp on, or can i just run it straight through the crimper?

No mandrel required for installation. You can run it straight through your crimper without any additional tooling for that step. It's built to work with -04 hose and pairs with H277 or H435 hose where shock hazards are a concern.
