fitting says it works with H277 or H435 hose, does that mean it won't work with other -16 hose types?

For this particular fitting, H277 and H435 are the specified compatible hoses. Those are the hose types it's rated and built to work with, so pairing it with a different -16 hose isn't something that can be confirmed based on what's known about this fitting. If you're running either of those two hoses, you're good to go.

got a -16 hose with H277 on it, will this fitting crimp onto that or is it for a different hose

Made for -16 hose and called out for use with H277 or H435, this crimp fitting is a match for that hose family in general purpose low to medium pressure hydraulic work, including situations where shock hazards exist.
