trying to swap out a fitting i busted, is this one a straight -16 hose crimp with a 1 inch male npt swivel?

You’re looking at a straight steel crimp fitting for -16 hose with a 1 inch male NPTF swivel end. The thread callout on the NPTF side is 1-11-1/2.

Will this fitting hold up okay in a hydraulic system that sees some pressure spikes now and then?

This Eaton Aeroquip fitting is made for general purpose, low to medium pressure hydraulic applications, and it's designed to handle shock hazards when used with H277 or H435 hoses.

Does this fitting need any kind of thread sealant or is it good to go right out of the box?

No sealant required, and no mandrel either. Just crimp it onto your -16 hose and make the NPT connection. The swivel design on the male end helps with alignment during installation, which cuts down on the usual frustration of getting everything to line up before you torque it down.
