fitting says no mandrel required - is that right? just crimp it straight onto the hose without any insert?

Correct, no mandrel is needed during the crimping process. That simplifies things quite a bit on the shop floor since you're not hunting down extra tooling for every assembly. It also skips the thread sealant step, so once you've got the crimp done, you're ready to go. Just make sure you're working with a -08 size hose, either H277 or H435 if your application involves shock hazards.
