i’ve got a -12 hose and need a straight male JIC end. Is this the right fitting, or am I off a size?

Match it up by the two key callouts. It’s a straight male JIC 37 degree flare with a 1-5/16-12 thread, and it’s made to crimp onto a -12 hose.

Will this fitting hold up okay in a hydraulic system that sees some pretty good pressure spikes from time to time?

This Aeroquip crimp fitting is made for general purpose, low to medium pressure hydraulic applications where there might be some shock. Using H277 or H435 hoses will give you the best results in those conditions.

does this fitting need a mandrel to install, or can you just crimp it straight onto the hose?

No mandrel required on this one. You crimp it directly onto the -12 hose without any internal support tool, which keeps the installation process pretty straightforward. Just make sure your crimp tooling is set up correctly for the hose and fitting size and you're good to go.
