Will this fitting work with a standard -12 hydraulic hose, or does it need to be a metric version?

It's optimized for use with a -12 hose size, so you should be good to go with a standard -12. This fitting is also compatible with both H277 and H435 hose series.

trying to match up a crimp end i pulled off, is this one the straight -12 for an M36 x 2 male DIN 3902 24 degree flare?

fitting says no mandrel needed, that right? trying to figure out if i can crimp this one up without any special tooling beyond what we already got in the shop

Correct, no mandrel is required for assembly with this fitting. That simplifies things quite a bit compared to some others in this size range. As long as you have a crimper set up for the -12 hose size, you should be able to get it done without hunting down additional tooling.
