fitting says no mandrel or thread sealant needed -- just want to make sure i got that right before i start crimping. is that accurate for this one?

Correct on both counts. The 1A12BJ8 goes on without a mandrel and without any thread sealant. Just get your crimp tooling set right for the -08 hose size and you're good to go. Straightforward process once you've got everything lined up.
