does this fitting need a mandrel or any special tooling to install, or is it pretty straightforward once you got the right crimper?

No mandrel required for this one. As long as you have a compatible crimp machine set up for the -08 hose size, you're good to go. The fitting is built to crimp directly without that extra step, which saves some setup time when you're working through a batch of assemblies.
