Does this thing need any special tools to put together, or can you just push the tubing on and call it done?

Barbed fittings like this one go together without threading or tooling. You push the tubing over the barbs on each port and the grip holds it in place. Nylon runs a little lighter and easier to handle than metal, so assembly is about as straightforward as it gets for a branch connection.
