got a eaton sv9-8 setup here. do i absolutely have to run this piece between the coils

Leaving this component out isn't an option for SV9-8 series configurations. A spacer is required to be inserted right between the coils to ensure proper assembly on your equipment.

is this spacer required every time you swap out coils on the SV9-8, or only in certain setups?

Every coil installation on the SV9-8 Series requires this spacer. It goes between the coils and keeps everything seated and stable. Skipping it isn't really an option if you want the valve to perform the way it's supposed to. It's listed as required for a reason, not just a recommended add-on.
