so with it sittin there de-energized, which way is blocked and which way is free flow?

In the de-energized state it blocks flow from port 2 to port 1, and it allows free flow from port 1 to port 2. When you energize the solenoid, it opens up for flow in both directions.

trying to figure out what coil goes on this valve. does it come in the box or do i gotta buy it separate

Buying the bare cartridge means you need to get the coil and housing separately. The correct coil for this unit is a J series 23-watt model. If you lack an existing manifold, look for a housing with a C-12-2 or C-12-2U cavity size.

valve blocks flow one way when it ain't powered up, right? trying to figure out if this'll work for a load holding setup on a harvester

Correct on the flow behavior. When the solenoid is off, flow from port 2 to port 1 is blocked, but fluid can still move freely from port 1 to port 2. Once you energize it, the pilot poppet lifts off the seat and the valve opens in both directions. Low leakage applications like load holding are exactly what this was built for, and it sees regular use on harvesters and similar mobile equipment for that reason. Just keep in mind the coil and housing are both sold separately, so you'll need to source those alongside the cartridge.

reckon this valve will hold up on my harvester? We run that thing pretty hard.
