What's actually happening inside this valve when it ain't energized, like which ports are open and which ones are blocked?

When the solenoid is de-energized, flow moves from port 2 to port 1, and port 3 stays blocked. Flip it to energized and the situation reverses, port 1 flows to port 3, and port 2 gets blocked. That makes it well suited for setups like single acting cylinders where you need separate pressure and tank lines routed through the same valve body.
