plain steel, no coating or anything like that, does this thing need any kind of thread sealant before you put it on?

No sealant required with this one. The plain steel combination nipple is built to go on as-is, no thread compound needed, which keeps the install pretty clean and straightforward. That also means one less step when you're swapping it out down the road.
