got some 1-wire hose laying around and need to know exactly what size this aeroquip fitting takes

Sized for -08 hose, the connection point is built for half-inch lines. Danfoss manufactures these steel reusable fittings specifically for 1-wire braid reduced bore applications.

It’s a straight steel reusable fitting for -08 hose and it uses a 3/4-18 SAE male inverted flare on the threaded end.

does this thing need a mandrel to put on, or can you just hand-assemble it?

No mandrel required on this one. You cut the hose to length at 2.05 inches and assemble it directly onto the -08 hose without any press equipment. That makes it a solid choice for field repairs where you don't have a lot of tooling on hand.
