fitting says it needs a mandrel for installation, is that something I gotta have on hand before I even start, or can I get away without it?

A mandrel is required for proper installation of this fitting. Skipping it risks improper hose seating and could compromise the connection under pressure. It's not optional with reusable fittings of this type, so make sure you've got one ready before you start the job.
