Does this fitting need any thread tape or sealant when you put it together, or does it seal up on its own?

The O-ring face seal design handles the sealing without any thread sealant or tape needed. The female SAE O-ring face seat creates the seal at the face of the connection, so you're not relying on thread engagement for leak prevention. No mandrel is required during installation either, which keeps the whole process pretty straightforward.

Will this fitting work with standard hydraulic hoses, or do I need something special?

This Aeroquip fitting is designed for use with -06 size hoses, so as long as your hose is that size, you should be good to go.
