fitting says no mandrel or thread sealant needed, is that actually right, or do i need to prep anything before putting it on?

No prep work required on either of those fronts. The reusable design on this fitting lets you thread it onto a -08 hose without a mandrel, and the female braze end seals up without thread sealant. Just make sure your hose is cut clean and square before assembly and you should be good to go.

trying to match up parts here, is this one for a -08 hose and a 1/2 inch tube OD on the other end?

It’s set up with a 0.50 tube OD female braze end and it’s made to work with a -08 hose size, in a straight configuration.
