Does this fitting need any thread sealant or a mandrel to go together right, or is it pretty much good to go out of the box?

No sealant needed and no mandrel required. The 37-degree JIC flare connection on the swivel end handles the seal on its own, and the reusable design means you can assemble it without any special prep tools. Just make sure your hose end is cut clean and square before you put it together.
