fitting says no thread sealant needed -- is that right for a JIC 37 degree flare swivel? always been told to use some kind of tape or paste on hydraulic fittings

JIC 37-degree flare connections seal on the metal-to-metal contact between the flare surfaces, not on the threads. That's why no thread sealant is needed here. Adding tape or paste to a flare-style fitting can actually cause problems by preventing the seating surfaces from making full contact. The swivel design on this fitting lets you position the hose without twisting it during makeup, and the seal happens at the flare, so you're good to go without any sealant.
