fitting says it works with AQP and StartLite racing hose -- does that mean it won't work on standard hydraulic hose?

Correct. The FBM1011 is built specifically for AQP and StartLite racing hose in the -04 size. Using it on a different hose construction could mean a poor seal or a connection that won't hold under pressure, so you'd want to match it to those hose lines only.
