got a -08 one wire braid hose, will this fitting screw right on and still be a straight end?

For a -08 hose in a 1 wire braid setup, this is a straight, two-piece reusable steel fitting made for that hose size. The swivel end is a 7/8-14 female JIC 37 degree flare, so it mates to a matching male JIC flare connection.

does this thing need a mandrel to put together, or can i just cut the hose and get after it?

No mandrel required on this one. The two-piece reusable design lets you cut your hose to length, a cutoff of 1.8 inches, and assemble it without any special tooling or thread sealant. That keeps the job moving when you're in a tight spot and don't have a press handy.
