does this spring need to be stretched out some to get it over the hose, or does it just slide on as-is?

For most installations you'll need to expand the coil a bit by unwinding it slightly to open up the inner diameter enough to get it seated over the hose. Once it's on, it should fit snug against the outside of the hose. A loose fit won't give you the protection you're after, so take your time working it into position.

Its inner diameter is 1.34 inches, so it's designed to fit hoses with a similar outer diameter. You might need to unwind it a bit to get it started.
