got a port that's been capped off on a hydraulic manifold and I need to plug it with something that'll hold -- this a straight thread setup or does it rely on a taper to seal?

This adapter is designed to fit any standard SAE male O-ring boss port. You shouldn't have any trouble getting it to seal properly as long as the port meets SAE specifications.
