trying to plug a 1/4-18 npt port, is this the right kind of plug or is it some weird thread

Built for a 1/4-18 male NPT pipe/plug connection, this is a countersunk hex plug style adapter in Eaton Aeroquip’s 2222 series with NPTF external pipe/plug threads.

what all can this plug be used for, grease fittings and such or just hydraulics?

Grease systems, instrumentation lines, and most standard hydraulic systems are all fair game for this plug. It's part of Eaton Aeroquip's 2222 Series and uses NPTF external pipe thread, so it seals well across a pretty wide range of fluid handling applications. Not just straight hydraulics by any means.
