got a 1-inch NPT male fitting on a hydraulic line and need to step it down to a 3/8 female port, this bushing style adapter do that?

That's what this one's built for. The male end threads into a 1-11/2 NPT port and the female end accepts a 3/8-18 NPT fitting, so you're reducing from a 1-inch male connection down to a 3/8-inch female.
