trying to step a 3/4 pipe thread down to a 1/4 female port, is that what this bushing does?

For stepping down pipe threads, it goes from a 3/4-14 male NPTF on one side to a 1/4-18 female NPTF on the other, so it adapts a larger male pipe connection into a smaller female pipe port.

For reducing a larger pipe port down to a smaller pipe connection, this adapter is a straight reducer bushing with 3/4-14 male NPT on the outside and 1/4-18 female NPT on the inside.

Got a line running 3/4 NPT male and need to step it down to a 1/4 female port. This the right bushing for that?

That's what this adapter handles. The male end threads into a 3/4-14 NPT female port, and the female end accepts a 1/4-18 NPT male fitting. It's a reducer bushing, so the whole point is bridging that size gap between two pipe thread connections without needing extra fittings in between.
