trying to tee off a 1/2 npt line, is this the one that’s male on the run and female on the branch

Function-wise, it’s a tee adapter that gives you a 1/2-14 male NPT on the run and a 1/2-14 female NPT on the run branch, so it’s meant for splitting or branching a 1/2 NPT pipe-thread connection in a compact fitting.

This Aeroquip tee is designed with NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel) internal and external pipe threads, which are compatible with standard NPT fittings.

does this tee adapter work for grease lines, or is it just for hydraulic oil?

Grease, instrumentation, and general hydraulic systems are all listed applications for this fitting. So if you're running a grease circuit and need a tee junction at 1/2-14 NPT, this one covers it. The zinc plated steel construction holds up well in those kinds of service environments.
