Will this adapter work with regular pipe fittings, or does it have to be NPTF?

This is an NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel) adapter, so it's designed to seal without tape or sealant, especially in fuel or hydraulic applications. Regular NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads might not seal as reliably without some extra help.

got a 3/8-18 npt port on a manifold. is this the straight adapter that goes male on one side and female on the other?

For a straight NPT connection, this adapter is 3/8-18 male NPT on one end and 3/8-18 female NPT on the other, so it matches a 3/8-18 NPT male-to-female setup.
