got a 1/8-27 npt male port and need to step it up, is this the right adapter?

For a straight pipe-to-pipe step-up, it matches that setup. One end is 1/8-27 male NPTF and the other end is 1/4-18 female NPTF.

what all can this adapter be used for, just hydraulics or other stuff too?

Grease systems, instrumentation lines, and most hydraulic setups all fall within what this fitting is rated for. It steps up from a 1/8-27 male NPT thread to a 1/4-18 female NPT, so anywhere you need to expand thread size in one of those system types, it fits right in. Pretty versatile little piece for how simple it looks.
