does this adapter need thread sealant or tape to seal up proper, or is it good to go as-is?

No sealant or tape needed on this one. BSPP threads seal on a mating face or with an O-ring rather than relying on thread engagement to create the seal, so you won't need to wrap it or coat it before installation. That's one of the advantages of British Parallel thread fittings over tapered thread designs.

got a hose setup with 1/2-14 BSPP on both ends, but i need one side to swivel. is this the right adapter for that?

For a BSPP to BSPP connection where you want one side to move during hookup, this adapter fits that job. It is a straight steel piece with a 1/2-14 male BSPP on one end and a 1/2-14 female BSPP swivel on the other.
