does this thing need any thread sealant or tape on either end when you're putting it in?

No sealant or tape needed on the SAE O-Ring Boss side. That end seals with the O-ring against a flat boss surface, so adding tape there would actually cause problems. The 1/4-18 NPT side is a tapered pipe thread, and NPT threads do typically benefit from sealant or tape for a leak-free connection. So one end yes, one end no depending on which port you're working with.
