fitting goes from SAE O-ring boss to JIC flare, right? just want to make sure before I order cause I've mixed these up before

Correct setup. The male end is a 3/4-16 SAE O-Ring Boss, which uses a straight thread and seals with an O-ring at the port. The female end is a 3/4-16 JIC 37 degree flare swivel. Both ends are the same thread size, so you're stepping between two different connection standards, not two different sizes. The 90 degree elbow body lets you redirect the line without needing a separate elbow fitting upstream or downstream.

does this adapter need any thread sealant or tape to seal up proper on the ORB side?

The male SAE O-Ring Boss end seals by compressing an O-ring against the boss face, so no thread tape or sealant is needed there. That's kind of the whole point of the ORB connection. The JIC swivel end on the other side relies on metal-to-metal contact at the 37 degree flare, which also seals without any compound. Get your torque right and both ends should hold clean.

got a hose end with a #8 JIC swivel and i need to turn it 90 degrees into an ORB port, is that what this fitting does?
