does this adapter need any thread sealant when you put it on, or is it good to go as-is?

No sealant needed on this one. The JIC 37 degree flare swivel end makes a metal-to-metal seal when properly torqued, and the NPT side on this fitting is manufactured to connect without requiring tape or compound. That said, some folks do apply a light thread sealant to NPT connections out of habit, but the fitting is built to function without it.

got a fitting with 1/2-14 male npt on one side. will this adapter get me over to a #12 female jic swivel?

For a pipe-to-flare hookup, it bridges 1/2-14 male NPT on one end to a 1-1/16-12 female JIC 37 degree flare swivel on the other.
