got a 1/2 NPT pipe fitting I need to swing 90 degrees into a 3/4 hose connection, this the right piece for that?

That's what this adapter is built for. One end is a 1/2-14 male NPT thread, which connects straight to your pipe fitting, and the other end is a 0.75 inch hose barb. The 90 degree elbow handles the direction change right at the fitting, so you're not fighting a stiff hose to make that turn. Works well in tight spots where a straight adapter just won't do.
