what exactly is this adapter used for? trying to figure out if it'll work for a grease line hookup on some older equipment

Grease lines are actually one of the listed applications for this fitting, along with instrumentation and general hydraulic systems. It's a straight male NPT to male NPT adapter, so both ends are 3/8-18 NPT threaded. If your equipment has a female NPT port on each connection point, this piece would bridge them together in a straight run.
