what exactly is this adapter doing, like is it just connecting two male NPT fittings together or is there more to it?

Two male NPT threads, one on each end, joined straight through with no reduction or offset. If you've got a port or hose end that's already male NPT and you need to mate it to another male NPT connection, this bridges that gap. It's a common need in instrumentation lines, grease systems, and general hydraulic hydraulic connections where you end up with two male threads facing each other and nothing to tie them together.

i just need a straight nipple, is this one 1/4-18 male npt on both ends?

Straight-through adapter with 1/4-18 male NPT on each end. It is part of the Eaton Aeroquip 2083 series and uses NPTF external pipe threads on both sides.
